Seiko
Unique
Explorer Numeral Dial / 1953

Intro

Seiko Super manual-winding watch from 1953. It is rare to find a Seiko from that era in such condition, considering the humid climate of Japan (where air conditioning was not common until the 1970s). The blued and gold hands and indexes are a real beauty to see in person. Despite its small size, it was a men's dress watch in 1950s Japan.

Story

The Seiko Super was the brand's first wristwatch with a center seconds hand—mounted concentrically with the hour and minute hands—whereas earlier Seiko watches placed a small seconds hand at the 6 o'clock position.

Leading the domestic Japanese watch market in the first half of the 1950s, the Super was a market leader from its release in 1950 and served as the foundation for further Seiko development, evolving into the groundbreaking Seiko Marvel in 1956.
