King Seiko
45KS
Hi-Beat Chronometer / 1969

Intro

This King Seiko 45KS Hi-Beat hand-winding watch from 1969 features a striking sunburst dial and a sharply sculpted case that reflects the bold, angular aesthetics of late 1960s Japanese watchmaking. It is powered by the renowned Caliber 45, a high-precision movement beating at 36,000 vibrations per hour—an impressive technical achievement for its time and a testament to Seiko’s commitment to mechanical excellence. With its refined design and historical significance, this is a watch that any collector can appreciate.

Story

Prior to the 1960s, Swiss watches were widely regarded as the global standard for quality, while Japanese timepieces were often seen as inferior. Seiko set out to challenge this perception, confident in its ability to match the Swiss in craftsmanship and innovation. To accelerate development, Seiko established two high-end watch lines under separate subsidiaries, fostering internal competition as a driver of progress. Grand Seiko was introduced in 1960 by Suwa Seikosha Co., and just a few years later, in 1963, Daini Seikosha Co. responded with the first King Seiko. This strategic rivalry between the two divisions laid the foundation for some of Japan’s most iconic and technically impressive watches.
